Pickleball was introduced to Lisburn Leisureplex in 2015 by Stephanie Lynas. She had seen it on TV and thought it would be a fun game to play. Different people joined her and started to play the game. It was a lot different to how it is played now! As that group learnt more, the game evolved and the Leisureplex supported them through better equipment. As it was growing – they only charged £1 per person for the first few years!

About 2 years into playing, numbers had grown and they formed a club. The committee consisting of people like Meryvn, Alan, Colin, Marian, Kate etc were the driving force introducing the social side to the club with outings, coffee & meals out.

By now we needed to develop another days play and it was decided that Mondays & Thursdays would be club sessions for 2 hours. The 45 members had grown from the hard sell to friends and family and gradually a few more groups have been formed in other council facilities.

The club held a tournament for Welsh, English, Scottish & Irish players and some of our players travel to tournaments in other countries.

The club have now developed a Thursday night session, thanks to Kate & Alan, so pickleball can be enjoyed by a younger generation.

We’ve had players from Canada, Venezuela, America, Spain and all over the country from other clubs – we always ensure they are made very welcome.

Watching Pickleball grow every year – it’s nice to know that we were the first to introduce it to Northern Ireland.

Keep Pickleballing!
